A STORY IN HIS OWN WORDS

The story of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Maharaj has been heard by myself over and over again by Baba Ji's very own words. This humble servant had the opportunity to stay with Baba Ji for a full 15 years up until a few days before Baba Ji breathed his last and gathered some information about His life. In this manner, whichever stories this humble servant has heard and realized in my master's own words, it is my humble attempt to share a briefed version in this book, so that in life those who are tired, discouraged and disheartened can gain some inspiration to live a life full of bliss and happiness.

One day I had the opportunity to share some moments with my Lord Master to know about His life and He started explaining, "Shastri Ji, I was born in a family that was completely devotional and spiritual and my father (Shehanshah Baba Avtar Singh Ji) always inspired me to work hard in life. My father used to labor very hard in a bakery and also helped to carry other people's luggage. As such, I inherited my father's hardworking traits in my own life. My mother Mata Budhwanti Ji also used to work very hard to take care of the family. My mother, whom the saints used to lovingly call Jagat Mata Ji, used to be a living example of love, simplicity, kindness and innocence. She never believed herself to be a special person due to her association (wife) with Shehanshah Ji. Just as in Pakistan where she used to keep her master Baba Boota Singh Ji in her own home, along with His family and other saints in order to perform selfless service for them, similarly she continued her motherly devotion and selfless service in Delhi as well. My parents naturally passed down this innocence, kindness, effort, dedication and devotion to me. Shehanshah Ji's devotional and benevolent life was not unfamiliar to others. With the divine blessings of Hazur Shehanshah Ji and Baba Boota Singh Ji I am able to serve humanity as a whole. The effect of these blessings brought our entire family closer to face the tasks of day-to-day life while we enjoyed a life filled with bliss and divinity, due to the knowledge of God.

Our parents, because they spent most of their time performing seva (selfless service), simran (God remembrance) and satsang (congregation), never found excuses to serve their master Baba Boota Singh Ji with all their mind, body and wealth. There was an important effect for this reason on our family. I still remember today, that even though I spent my entire childhood at the feet of Baba Boota Singh Ji, still I performed my schooling with full concentration. I remember that while studying from grades eight to ten, I simultaneously acquired knowledge about motor parts. Even though we did not have any shortcomings of food and clothing, however we never had enough time to perform selfless service and attend sangat. It was clear to me that, due to the blessings of Baba Boota Singh Ji, my life here and hereafter had been blessed, however even though I wanted to perform a lot of selfless service, still I was lagging behind in the race. My belief was that a devotee's life here and hereafter should be blissful by all angles. There is only one solution for this - selfless service.

As time went by, slowly I began to work at Babu Mahedev Singh Ji's spare parts shop (Rawalpindi), in order to help Shehanshah Ji financially.

In April 22, 1947 with God's grace, my wedding took place with your intelligent and spiritually inclined Mata Kulwant Kaur. How Kulwant has helped me every foot of the way, this is no longer hidden from anyone. She has never given me any worries. Rather, she kept a spiritual relationship with the rest of my family. She only worshipped Shehanshah Ji (my father and guru) as her holy master, rather than her father-in-law.

After having said this, His Holiness became quiet. I suddenly realized that Baba Ji's wedding took place only a few months prior to India's independence day, and I wanted to know how this affected Baba Ji. To break the silence I asked "Baba Ji due to India's independence you must have had to bear a lot of hardships. How did you feel at this time?" Seeing my curiosity, Baba Ji started saying "I felt that as if all this was just a game being played by corrupted and selfish religious figures.

Due to these radical people, human beings whether Hindu, Muslim or Sikh that should be living together peacefully are now thirsty for each other's blood. I still believe today that those Hindus or Muslims or Sikhs that have attacked each other and killed the many innocent children and harmless women are not the real people to be blamed, due to their lack of vision and misguidance. Extremists become like a veil in front of man's mind making men enemies with each other. Seeing all this corruption around, at that time something from inside called out that even if my life depended on it, I will try my hardest to end religious fanaticism, narrow mindedness and radicalism in humanity. Because of Shehanshah Ji's teachings and blessings my life found a new meaning altogether.

Observing all this religious fanaticism we also became targets. By force, the Government created a camp for refugees like us in Rawalpindi. This camp was called "Waha Camp." Our family, like all the other families was forced to stay all day in this camp. Due to what I inherited from both my parents as well as Baba Boota Singh Ji, I felt that I could not just sit around idly and eat the Government's food day in and day out. Because of this, I truly began to believe that every person living here was like my very own. I still remember hearing on that day Baba Boota Singh Ji's very words clearly that there is "One Father and we are all equally His children." I felt as if He (Baba Boota Singh Ji) was constantly and directly telling me that these are all your brothers and sisters, stand up and begin to serve them all!

My brother in law, Gobind Singh Ji and I used to cut and bring back wood from outside, which fueled the brick ovens that would cook our food and those who were living in the camp, whosoever wished, would come and sit together with us to eat and talk, thus showing an example of unity and love. We did not have much to distribute, but whatever the Government used to give to us I used to be busy in giving away the same. People must have already mentioned to you that, without worrying about my own family's well being, I used to serve others. This might not be correct, but in my mind there was no distinction between my own and others. I was trying to fulfill the needs of every needy person whether they were part of my own family or belonged to "someone" else's.

Today, I feel indebted to Baba Boota Singh Ji and Baba Avtar Singh Ji, who taught me about devotion, which inspired me to see in each and every human being my Satguru. By selflessly serving everyone, I realized that I was only serving my own parents or my Satguru.

I was like any ordinary child. Like any other child, I was born into an ordinary family. By working hard, my parents brought me up like any other parent would bring up a child. Similarly, my schooling was done like any common child. I do not hesitate in telling that I was not born into this world by way of any special or supernatural way. Whatever I have achieved is through the grace of my Lord Master, the blessings of my parents and with the cooperation of my family. As expected by any human being to be hardworking, I also did the same. I was fortunate to have the help of my Satguru and my parents. I want to say very clearly that I lived my life like any ordinary human being, and even today I am doing the same. Like any common person, man must work hard, use common sense, attain blessings from their elders and raise a family with his wife; I was successful in doing so.

I always, in order to keep my body healthy, I was never neglectful in my sleeping and eating habits. About my mind, I have already told you that with the grace of my parents and Satguru that my mind had naturally become elevated and to earn money I worked hard and honestly as per the teachings of my parents and Satguru.

After hearing these words of Baba Ji, I could not control my curiosity any longer. For this reason, when Baba Ji paused, I suddenly said, "This humble servant has heard from the very beginning that from your very childhood you held a very distinctive personality. Having heard your words today you have confirmed this.

After having heard me, Baba Ji said, "No Shastri Sahib, it is not like that. I want to say that every person can advance in his life. God has given each and everyone of us the power to work hard and succeed in life. If somebody wants to take advantage of this potential to succeed he can, if not it is his own choice. If a mother and father wants to see their children advance then they will have to set an example for them with their own life, and keep a healthy environment, so that their children do not depend on some kind of magical or lucky break in life but rather should work hard, honestly, virtuously and accept the will of God.

"I do believe that the karmas from a person's past lives can be both helpful or a hindrance to succeed in life. But man can give a new direction to his present life and can live a changed life, thus setting an example for the rest of the world. I firmly believe that man can change his luck and destiny with the grace of Satguru and with the blessings of holy saints. It could happen that he may run into many hurdles during the way." After speaking divine words, Baba Ji took a pause.

After awhile, His Holiness started again "We arrived from "Waha" camp (Rawalpindi) into India. Some people had already arrived in India. The luggage that was left behind in Waha camp by some saints and others, with the grace of God, we were able to bring them along with us in a goods train to India (Jullandhar)." His Holiness then stood up and said "Let us continue the rest of this story in the evening." Baba Ji then left the room and then this humble servant left for my own house, keeping in memory all that had been said.

I was obligated to think, over and over again, that Satguru who has all the power in the universe, however he presents himself like an ordinary human being. From time immemorial, God has incarnated from time to time as an ordinary human being in order to give the world a purposeful direction on how to live a life of humanity. Instantaneously, a thought arose in my mind that I would have to spread these divine words of wisdom to the entire world.

I went to visit Baba Ji at the designated time during the evening. Smiling, Baba Ji started to say -

"Shastri Sahib! Whatever I needed to tell you I already told you this morning. However, it seems that it is your intention that you would like to hear my life story in my own words. Your loving intention is forcing me to continue these thoughts. Arriving in Delhi, my father Baba Avtar Singh Ji became totally dedicated in spreading the message of Truth day and night. Now, it was no longer expected of Him to continue an ordinary day-to-day life. I committed myself in taking over these responsibilities upon my own shoulders.

By that time, respected Gopal Singh Premi (Sewadal Commander Incharge) and respected Babu Mahedev Singh (Experienced Missionary) had started a Motor Parts business in Mohi Gate, Delhi. After receiving permission from Shehanshah Ji, I also joined them. Hard work always pays off. With the grace of God Almighty, our hard work started to reap its awards. We then expanded our business in Kashmiri Gate. We started our work there as well. Shastri Ji! Due to our hard work and honesty, our business slowly began to expand and we were successful; my partners and I opened a few more shops in Delhi and Jullander, and we opened an office in Bombay.

I would like to really emphasize that although I respected my father, but over and beyond that I served and worshipped Him only as my Satguru. When our business was well established in Jullander, I was instructed to come back to Delhi. In Delhi, I was designated as Baba Ji's driver and drove him to sangat form place to place. A motor works shop was also opened in the Nirankari Coti, where all the vehicles used for missionary purposes were being repaired, in which I found a special interest. I always attended sangat regularly, but I backed away from speaking during congregation and from sitting in the front. Sitting in the back, near the saint's shoes, I used to blissfully enjoy sangat and after, I used to engage myself back to my assigned duty.

One day during a large congregation, Shehanshah Ji told me to sit in his place and preside over the sangat. Shastri Ji! You well understand how I must have felt at that point. I did not understand what was happening. If I agreed to it, then I would not be capable of undertaking this responsibility, nor was I a good speaker, nor did I have knowledge of the Holy Scriptures; but nor could I say no, because I never dared to say no to Shehanshah Ji. From December 1962 onwards, I was given this responsibility. I was fortunate that even after I was given this responsibility, I had the opportunity of being in the company of Shehanshah Ji for about six or seven years (1963-1969) and constantly received the blessings from him, hence by serving Him and under His guidance my mind slowly became more involved to carry on this responsibility. Shehanshah Ji's blessings, the collaboration of the saints and the Will of God allowed me to become capable to fulfill this responsibility. I also tried my best to fulfill my responsibility with dedication and honesty. Also, whenever God wants to accomplish something through somebody He does so by his own Will. This is what happened with me.

Baba Ji was speaking these words, when a thought occurred to me that history is a witness to see that those disciples that were blessed with this divine responsibility, never even dreamt of assuming this position. Baba Ji further said -

It was my belief that to fulfill any responsibility, one required dedication, honesty and truthful living, at the same time right planning also plays a vital role. For this reason, in order to spread the message of the Mission, I was constantly reminded that to give a practical form to this goal, not one person can do it all alone, rather you would need hundred and thousands of hands together to accomplish this task. Shastri Ji! You know very well that I met with those responsible saints three times to discuss the matter further - two times in Missouri and once in Ludhiana. With the efforts of these saints, the Mission began to expand in leaps and bounds. The message of Truth began to resound in each and every corner of India and abroad. After a brief pause, He continued -

"I would like to emphasize that my wife and your Raj Mata Ji gave her fullest collaboration and support during each step of the way. Today we observe the large growth of children, sisters and mothers in the Nirankari Mission due to her dedication and effort. Her commitment towards the family allowed me to focus more on spreading this message of Truth to each and every house. It is not a hidden fact how she taught our children how to follow the path of the Guru's teachings."

After saying these words, His Holiness got up and left the room. I also picked up my book and pencil and left for the office. The next day, I took the opportunity and arrived in front of Satguru Baba Ji. Seeing me, Baba Ji started smiling and this gave me the strength I needed to start speaking in front of Him. I said, "Baba Ji, one question keeps arising in my mind over and over again. Our Mission is one based on truth, kindness, love, humility and humanity; we always try to do everything for the benefit of the whole world, so why is it that our mission is faced with so much hatred and animosity? We do not say anything wrong to anyone." Listening to my words, Baba Ji said "Shastri Ji, you know that preventing the message of Truth from spreading is nothing new in this world. The light of Truth only comes forward and displays itself after having gone through the hands of (tap) and sacrifice (tyaag). History is a witness to the fact that those who walked upon the path of Truth had to face much anger and hatred. In some cases, they even had to give up their lives for Truth. For this reason, our Mission, which is spreading quickly in spreading the message of Truth, is also facing sacrifices.

Without sacrifice, nothing can be accomplished. You are all seeing how in (Patankaur), (Kadiaa), (Kumaan), Amritsar and in (Kantpur) life threatening attacks are happening. Only a few days ago, in (Durgh), another attack occurred. I feel as if to spread this Truth, without sacrifices, people will not see the real picture of our mission.

After having spoken, Baba Ji became quiet all of a sudden. After awhile, to break the silence, His Holiness began to say, "From 1963 until 1980, all of my doings are in front of you. You know the story of our mission better than I do. Everything is happening right in front of your eyes. I would only like to say that if people would like to live a life filled with happiness, then they should not wait for any miracles or luck in their life, but rather, following a natural way of life should work hard with effort, honesty and dedication throughout their lives.

Standing up, His Holiness said, "Yes - something I do agree with is that for this to happen, a proper environment is needed, and that man should constantly be looking for such an environment. The company of the saints, and their blessings help in taking man to higher standings in life. However, these great saints are only found with the grace of Nirankar. For this reason, to acquire the grace of God, we should always engage our minds in satsang (company of saints), seva (selfless service) and simran (God remembrance). To keep one's mind focused on these three, one should have an unwavering faith in the Satguru. In this manner, after attaining the blessing of Satguru and then walking the path of hard work, (taap) and sacrifice, every person can progress further and further in life.

"Remember that advancement is not only for some rare persons, but rather anyone can achieve it; those people that work hard with dedication, honesty and complete faith continue to progress more and more." Saying these words, His Holiness quietly left the room. I understood that Baba Ji had said whatever He had needed to say. It was now our duty to spread this message of Truth with that same effort, dedication, (taap), and sacrifice. With Satguru's and the Saint's blessings we have to bring this Truth to each and every home, working day and night. Thus, sharing the same happiness that we have enjoyed in our lives with others in this world.

His Holiness Baba Ji had ended the conversation and left the room with calmness, but in me it felt as if a spark (trang) had ignited in each one of my pores - which strengthened my faith even more to see that it is the very greatness of such exalted spiritual masters that, being the custodian of all the powers in the world and being formless God in the flesh, yet they only consider themselves as ordinary people. Ironically, ordinary people try to portray themselves as great beings.

A thought suddenly came to my mind that, just like in order for adults to teach their children how to walk they must bend down and hold their fingers, or in order for even the wisest person to teach a child how to read he/she must first begin by repeating the alphabet over and over again to the child, and when they have learnt the alphabet then according to the child's mental capacity the professor keeps on teaching them more and more. Not knowing the full mental capacity of the teacher, a child mistakenly assumes that whatever the teacher explains to the child, that this is the only knowledge that the teacher has, and nothing beyond it. Similarly, these God realized saints have a very vast spiritual knowledge, and even with one glance of mercy they can change the entire fate of a person, with their blessings even a person's misfortune can turn into a fortunate incident and their (dyan) can even enlighten someone, having just a glimpse of them can sooth and bring a coolness to one's eyes, and their (tadbiran) can change a human's fate, however these Master's of all the powers, to teach humans to live as humans they do those kinds of works that set an example to everyone of how to live as a human in society. Just to accomplish this task would be a human's primary objective in life. For this reason, all the efforts of God realized people are focused on teaching people on earth to live as human beings should. For this reason, people believe these saints to be ordinary people and it is not easy for them to see who a saint really is. The truth is that these God realized saints give importance to hard work, dedication, honesty and hard work so that people do not become lazy or inactive, although it also true that both actions and the fruits of the actions are blessings of them.

Even if these saints would like to use a miracle to attract people of the world, then in one instance they could attract the entire world, but instead of using any kind of miracle or supernatural means, they rather change a person's way of thinking, speaking and intentions by setting people on the right path towards humanity through a silent protest, and this is exactly what Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji did. Throughout each one of life's steps, and in all the areas of life, he first set an example by living out all of His teachings in His own life - like he wanted others to do. This was His greatness and excellence.

BALANCE BETWEEN FAMILY LIFE AND SPIRITUAL LIFE (PARCHAR)

To say that the life of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji was a long journey would not be anything new. From December 1962 onwards, the responsibility to spread the message of Truth was placed on His shoulders by Shehanshah Baba Avtar Singh Ji, for the welfare of mankind He worked day and night to accomplish this goal. He undertook long tours; at night He would travel and in the day He would bless different saints, this became Baba Ji's daily routine. Even though He used to go around in cars on tours to spread the message of Truth, still after the tours He would labor in the workshop and service the cars inside; it seemed that Baba Ji never gave His physical body much rest. The will to benefit and assist mankind was so greatly imbedded in His heart that he was always ready to go anywhere in order to spread the message of Truth to each and every person. This determination never allowed His Holiness to stay at rest anywhere at any time. Whatever the weather was like and no matter what hurdles came in the way, still with His great willpower and determination He held everyone up.

Some memories arose in me as if they had just occurred yesterday, and as if I were still seeing them. This story happened in either 1965 or 1966, however the details of the story are still embedded in my mind clearly. Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji and Nirankari Raj Mata Ji were leaving on a tour to Rajasthan in the early morning. My humble self and Hari Mohan Sharma were also in the car, whereas the duty to drive the car was given to Puyja Mann Singh Ji. The luggage had been put inside the trunk of the car, just as Satguru Baba Ji and Param Puyja Raj Mata Ji came out of their room. A few sewadars that were near the car bowed to the holy couple as they came near, during which His Holiness' daughters, Niranjan Ji, (Mohan Ji), Jagjit Ji and Swarn Ji came out of their room. Bowing their heads to His Holiness' feet, and their eyes, filled with devotion became teary. To hide their tears from Baba Ji, the four daughters quickly went back into their room, but nothing can be left hidden from Satguru's sharp vision nor from a mother's love.

Our car was traveling to reach its destination, but today, just like always there was no conversation or talking happening. Usually on tour programs, His Holiness Baba Ji would sit beside the driver of the car, and in the back would be Raj Mata Ji, my humble self and Hari Mohan Sharma Ji. On the trip, Raj Mata Ji would usually spark up a small conversation so that the driver would not get sleepy, and so that the trip would not seem so long. Today however, Mata Ji had her head laid on the window with closed eyes - as if she were sleeping. For some time, the car had a silent atmosphere, but after crossing the city of Gurdawan, Hari Mohan Sharma Ji broke this silence by saying "Mata Ji what is wrong today? You are the one who makes these road trips easy for us. If you sit like that with your eyes half closed, then we will all fall asleep soon, and then Mann Singh Ji will also be driving with his eyes half closed - because not even he gets to have a chance to completely rest. It feels as if you are worrying about something serious that you are in a state of such deep concentration."

After hearing Sharma Ji's words, Raj Mata Ji got back up and said, "No, I am not thinking of anything." Mata Ji had hardly finished her sentence, when Baba Ji who was sitting in the front seat looked back and said, "Mata is certainly thinking of something, what is the problem?" When Baba Ji asked, Raj Mata Ji spoke what was on her mind and said "Today when leaving for this tour program, our daughters tried to hide their tears from us because they are both intelligent and gursikh as well. That's why they do not want to be any kind of impediment in our way. However, being a mother, many questions have appeared in front of me. I am thinking that in this Mission a great importance is given to living the life of a householder and that to become a householder is every human being's first and foremost duty. Many a times, I am forced into thinking that it is a mother's responsibility to look after the bringing up of her children. She should know altogether her children's likes and dislike, where her children are in their education. I am always accompanying You in these Pracharak tours. How am I fulfilling my responsibility as a householder? Or am I lacking completely in this domain? It is this question that comes and goes into my mind every once in awhile and thus becomes a source of concern for myself." After hearing Mata Ji's words, Baba Ji clapped His hands and started to chuckle, He said "We only go on tours for a few days. For the children's tending, they have their grandmother and Mata Soma Ji. For their schooling, food provisions and other such needs you yourself make the appropriate arrangements before leaving. For a moment, think about those people who make a living by going to foreign countries around the world on business, and some of them leave their homes for many years or even stay in their home country but live temporarily in other cities for the sake of their business' or work. Are these people not fulfilling their responsibilities as householders? The truth is that to live at home or to take care of one's family involves such a separation from the family itself. Even in this separation and distance, their responsibility is being fulfilled; and even then, these worldly people leave behind their families temporarily for the sake of making money whereas you are leaving behind your family for a short time for the sake of spreading this message of Truth."

After hearing the words of Baba Ji, Mata Ji said, "Nevertheless Baba Ji, I still bear in mind about the children's well being since I am a mother; a mother's love sometimes becomes screening." Taking into account Mata Ji's intentions, Baba Ji said "Certainly this love that you are speaking of is a positive sign in any household. Love within family, love between relatives and relations, love between human beings - it is to teach mankind this lesson of love that we have left our very own homes. However always keep in mind one thing, that your family is no longer limited to two, four or six members, but rather the entire humankind is your family. It is also important to bear in mind that in order to gain something great, sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice smaller things. Just like for the family we sacrifice many of our own personal things, for work we sometimes sacrifice our family, for our country we sacrifice work and for the world we must sometimes sacrifice our country as well. Every thing has its own cost. The salvation of mankind also demands it rightful expense and sacrifice. This path that you have chosen to follow is based on a foundation of love, and love always demands sacrifice."

In order to comfort us three (my humble self, Sharma Ji and Mann Singh Mann Ji) Satguru Baba Ji deemed it necessary to say "Just look at these three, who leave behind there wives and children far away and follow us everywhere cheerfully. Also, we never lack in giving our children the important things they need for their upbringing, nor do we lack in giving them things they desire. Then again it is Formless God Nirankar that does everything Himself for His devotees, you leave behind your children for the welfare of the entire mankind family and Formless God sits inside the hearts of the saints in order to raise your children." After these words, the rest of the journey remained blissful as always.

Even today the thought stays with me that the conversation that took place in the car between His Holiness and Param Puyja Mata Ji was not only intended for them, but rather the important lesson learnt that day was for us all - all the people involved in spreading this message of Truth (pracharak) should remember this truth that without expense and sacrifice the spreading of this message is impossible. Every pracharak must look after their family and home, making sure that the environment of the household is such that the family is compensated for all the sacrifices made.

DEVOTION WHILE LIVING THE LIFE OF A HOUSEHOLDER:

THE PATH TO A BLISSFUL LIFE

It was my good fortune and a blessing that I had been given the duty of looking after the education of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji's children. Baba Ji and Mata Ji also kept in mind all of their children's interests and likings. They were always attentive to the company that they kept, their activities as well as their heart's desires, and from time to time would come to see them personally and give them their darshan. One day, like every other, I was sitting in a room with the children and stressing clearly that now your final exams are quickly approaching and for this reason all of your interests and activities will be temporarily stopped. You will not go to the market, nor will you listen to the radio, nor will you play with friends, now will you do sewa or sangat - you will only study! I did not even know when His Holiness Baba Ji had entered the room and He had heard everything that I had just said. Seeing Baba Ji, we all went to bow at His Holy feet. Baba Ji laughingly said "What were you just saying Shastri Ji? That all of the children's activities are stopped? You are completely right to say this, now you children should put your total concentration in studying." After listening to His words, His youngest daughter Sister Swarn Ji took hold of Baba Ji's feet and humbly requested "Baba Ji, you are all knowing, you know very well that we have already lost a lot of time from our hands, now only Your grace and blessing can give our efforts any kind of support. Baba Ji, please bless us so that we may be successful in passing our exams." Listening to His daughter, Baba Ji, in order to make myself and the children understand said, "Child, my blessings are permanently with all of you however doing the effort is your own duty. Shastri Ji is right in saying that if you study whole heartedly, then when exam times arrive there will be no hardships to overcome. Meanwhile, Shastri Ji you may continue to prevent the children from wasting time with other activities, however selfless service and the company of the saints are also beneficial in aiding the children in their worldly studies. Remember that just by attending sangat the heart and mind feel calm, blissful and relaxed. When the mind and heart are fresh and there are no worries or anxieties, then what would normally take an entire day to study will only take a few hours. And then, selfless service of the holy saints blesses one with strength and capability; from this acquired strength one's hard work becomes even more fruitful. If you wish to stop the children from wasting their time on various inefficient activities then I plead you to do so, however God- remembrance (Simran), company of the holy saints (Satsang) and selfless service (Seva) are their spiritual strength and also food for the mind. Let them continue to tread on this path." Saying this, Baba Ji left the room and the children began to study. With the grace of God, the children passed with flying colors.

After this incidence, I often think to myself how very profound was the wisdom of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji. He had explained to us household mothers and fathers that Sangat and Seva are not just side activities that we should only do on our free time, but rather Sangat and Seva enhances the strength of the Soul inside us all, with which the rest of our worldly affairs are automatically resolved in a effortless manner. At the same time, we should not think that we are doing Seva and Sangat, so there is no longer a need to do any efforts of our own now. Nor should our children believe that since they are doing Seva and Sangat they will automatically pass their classes without having to study. Children should never be impeded from doing Seva and Sangat, so that they can grow up in a beneficial and nourishing environment, but at the same time, it should be explained to them that blessings are given to those who perform their individual efforts. The lesson learned is that blessings on top of hard work act as icing on a cake.

Today when I see a God realized householder in some kind of difficulty, then I remember Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji as an example of the perfect householder and I visualize Baba Ji and his family in my mind's eyes. Baba Ji used to explain life's philosophy in a very calm and light hearted manner, by which practicing in our lives every house could become a heaven. There is another story very fresh in my mind today.

This story took place about 30 or 35 years ago. In the city of Venay Nagar, there used to reside a very devoted saint, Sister Dharam Ji. After being blessed with Gyan (God-Knowledge) she became so immersed in it, that Seva, Simran and Satsang became her new found absorption. This sister was well educated and was working at the telephone exchange. Her personality used to be very aggressive and due to this, people around her used to keep their distance from her. However, after receiving Gyan, as she kept attending the Satsang, slowly the feelings of humbleness and love began to arise inside of her. Not only did the sister notice this dramatic change of personality, but rather others observed this change as well. She became so attached to the sangat that, after having attended the morning sangat she would come home to feed her children, and then go to the office. After the office, she would come home and have tea with her family and then get dressed to go to the evening sangat. After this, she would come home to make supper for the family and then go back to attend the nightly satsang. Sangat, household, office work and social functions became her daily routine.

Her husband, Shri Manik Ji worked in the federal government. He had been blessed with Gyan, however attending congregation on occasion was enough for him. Sometimes he would get worried about his wife attending sangat so often and become like a stumbling block for her, but he did not say anything because he thought that at least she was going somewhere beneficial - if I try to stop her, I might get cursed.

One day, both of them came to see Hazur Baba Ji in the Nirankari Coti to get blessings for some family matter. Baba Ji, laughingly came out of His room. As soon as the couple did namaskar to His Holiness, and before any of them could say a word, Baba Ji asked Manik Ji "So, how is the family life?" This gave Manik Ji the opportunity to speak what was in his heart. Then again, what could be hidden from this all knowing being? He said in a blameful tone "True Master, there is no other problem between us as a married couple, except that Dharam attends satsang mornings, evenings and nights. She gives a bit of time towards the office, cleaning of the house and social functions, however it seems that she has no time for me or the family. Sometimes I get frustrated with this happening everyday." After hearing these words of Manik Ji, Hazur Ji placed His hands on Dharam Ji's head and explained to her that "Even if we attend sangat once a day, if we listen to it very carefully with the body and mind, and then practice the lessons in our life, then this is sufficient for any person."

After hearing His Holiness' words, Sister Dharam anxiously said "Baba Ji, whichever saint is holding a satsang at their house, they invite me so lovingly, how can I refuse those people who always await? In reality, this love, this inspiration and the feeling of wanting to do sewa, these are all for the Satguru, but it is You yourself that has taught us to see You inside of your saints. Now you tell me - what should I do? On one side is the family responsibility and on the other hand the love of the saints. I have duties towards the family as well as the saints. Every moment of my life, I try to gain the efforts needed to perform family responsibilities and serve the saints with your blessings. However, the body is only one, I cannot be present at two places at once." Saying this, Sister Dharam Ji openly presented her thoughts to His Holiness. Baba Ji had understood the husband and wife's intentions. He then explained, "Listen, dedication requires surrender and sacrifice. For dedication, the body, the family and other such materialistic attractions must be sacrificed. Time within time and wealth within wealth must be spent. Those who tread on the path of dedication, if the aid of their family members is achieved, then everyone is able to gain the fruit of devotion equally! If the service rendered to the satsang is done for personal gain and glory then it must be stopped." After a brief silence, His Holiness continued "Manik Ji! It seems to you that Dharam does not give you enough time isn't it? Would it not be nice if yourself along with your children began to go to satsang with her? Not only will your family be together, but you will also acquire the love and blessings of the satsangat. You will no longer have to sit at home waiting for her, and she will also have your company.

Dharam! While I am explaining all this to Manick, you must also carry on your family duties. Together you must both accomplish the household tasks successfully. You must also acquire his happiness." Cheerfully, Baba Ji said, "Dharam Ji asked for a blessing, and realized that the knowledge gained in the satsang must be practiced at home as well as in society."

In reality, Manik Ji was mindfully committing that from now on he will cooperate with his wife and would accompany her as well, on the other side his wife Dharam realized that the satsang teaches us to practice our actions in our daily lives. These teachings I should not only hear but also apply, and this is the first commitment to your family life. Now I should not give a chance for complaints. Hence they both committed, in their minds, to choose a common path. Husband and wife bowed to His Holiness and asked for the blessing that both family life and devotion should be carried out in a joyous manner. There should be a balance between the two.

Even today, whenever I hear or see any similar problems that one family member is wanting to devote his body, mind and wealth while the rest of the family members do not consider this to be beneficial, then this incident appears in my mind as if it happened yesterday; that the sacrifice made by the family members, of the devoted family member is also a form of devotion and does not go fruitless. The path of the dedicated one is not easy to tread, and that is why only a few can choose to go on it. However, these few people are also the ones that show the path to the rest of mankind. The devoted ones must be alert in keeping a good balance between family duties and their devotion.

MAYA (Wealth) - ONLY A TOOL TO LIVE

The House of God is completely filled with materialistic wealth. Even if every person on earth were to benefit from this vast and immense ocean, it would be compared to taking only 2 or 4 gallons of water from an entire ocean - thus not making any difference to the ocean. The True Master is constantly blessing us with happiness, it is only our own fault that we keep enjoying the given but forgetting the Giver. I remember such an instance relating to this.

This story is about Sri Krishan Lal Ji and Sister Shila Ji (his wife). These two were both devotees of the True Master, however they were constantly hankering after worldly desires. One day, the couple came to Hazur Baba Ji to seek His blessings, so that they could have so much wealth that they will be able serve thier family, relatives and the saints. Explaining further, they said that presently they often miss attending the sangat and miss their family gatherings, making them feel ashamed. They said to His Holiness, "When we meet our relatives, they say 'Whoever becomes Nirankari, their fate and fortune changes for the best, and that person becomes wealthy. So, what happened in your case? Why do you not seek blessings from Baba Ji."

The Satguru is always kind hearted. Baba Ji in a calm voice said, "You should remember Nirankar. With your honest and hard earned money do selfless service. God will bless you." The True Master's words always bear truth. With the grace of God, their fortunes turned for the best. The first year, they constantly attended the sangat, but then slowly their attendance diminished more and more. The absence from the sangat was felt by Krishan Lal's wife, Shila. Time passed. After about three years, Shila Ji brought her husband along with her to the Nirankari Colony, to seek Baba Ji's blessings. Entering, she immediately told me "I was forced to bring my husband along with me today. Please be kind enough to let us have blessings from Baba Ji." At that time, it was Hazur Baba Ji's time for dinner. I was afraid as to how I should request Baba Ji to meet with them, but in the meantime Baba Ji came out of His room and smilingly said "What is wrong Seth Sahib we don't see you anymore lately?" Explaining his helplessness, Krishan Lal said "With your divine blessings, my small business has grown into a big business. Such that in the morning I leave my house while the children are yet sleeping. At night, I come back so late that the children are also sleeping again. I do not understand when I should do simran, sangat and seva."

Baba Ji quickly understood that this devotee has become totally engrossed by Maya. His Holiness said "Seth Sahib! I never discourage anyone from making money, however use this wealth as your slave. By making it your boss, it will only make you dance in circles. Leaving behind God, and chasing after this Maya your whole life like a slave, then life's happiness will disappear. If you do not give time to your children, and do not take care of their interests and only keep spending money on them, this will eventually lead to your children becoming a headache for you. Then regretting will have no effect. For this reason, instead of chasing after wealth, connect yourself with God Almighty and always take the time out to attend sangat and also for your family, thus using Maya as a tool enjoy your family life and a blissful life." Seth Sahib felt as if His Holiness had just awoken him from a deep dream and shown him reality. Bowing his head at the lotus feet of Baba Ji, he asked for the blessing that he may attend sangat regularly, do simran constantly and live a purposeful life.

His Holiness' philosophy about Maya only being a tool for man and not the goal, everyone can benefit from it. Making God the master of Maya and placing Maya as the servant will bring happiness and peace. Maya in itself is not bad. What is bad is the way of using it. Being proud of wealth, constantly chasing after it and being attached to it will lead to a breakdown in the foundation of our relations, and we love this wealth so much that we forget the other basic human values. One must earn their livelihood honestly, and use this wealth in a proper manner. By listening to Baba Ji's words, the derailed life of these devotees was back on track. I was obliged to think that His Holiness was such a great being that He sets those that are attached to Maya on the path of devotion and those who are lacking in earning their livelihood He teaches them the importance of working hard and honestly so that they do not become a burden on society. Thinking a little more deeply, I understood that this is the true path of righteousness and devotion. A good balance of both of these will lead to a happy life, here and hereafter.

GOLD ONLY SHINES AFTER FIRST BEING PLACED IN FIRE

There is no angle of life left that Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji did not concentrate upon. He believed more in the teachings of a practical life. He played a model role, as a father, to motivate and prepare his children to acquire a good education and gain their own experiences in life. He wanted them to learn the hard and true facts of life, so that basic human values will become the basis of their lives. I want to present one instance, by which the reader will experience how His Holiness' vast experience, in all domains, covered each and every small detail.

This story is from that time, when Baba Ji's son, Seth Hardev Singh (Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji) was studying in Patiala public school, Yadvindra. Seth Hardev Singh Ji came back to Delhi, to spend his summer vacations. When the holidays were over, I was given the responsibility to accompany him back to the hostel (school campus). Due to his long stay and the change of weather coming up, he had to carry back quite a lot of luggage with him. Puyja Raj Mata Ji instructed me to bring Seth Hardev Singh Ji back to his hostel and then meet with the school's principal, the other teachers and the Mahapurshas in Patiala. To reach Patiala, we had to catch a fast train from Delhi to Rajpur, and then take a bus from there. After placing the luggage in a car from the Nirankari Colony, we went to the railway station. On the way, we had to push the stalled car a few times and we barely made it on time. With difficulty we obtained our tickets and with greater difficulty we managed to place the luggage into the train. We hardly stepped in, when the train began to move. Because the train was overloaded, we had to stand up during the entire trip with our luggage.

A luggage carrier helped us to carry some of our luggage out of the station, until the bus stop. Since it was evening time, the buses were all full, therefore we let two buses go, but when the third and last bus came, we forced our luggage in and stood up next to the door for the whole trip, until we reached Patiala. This bus was carrying more passengers than its capacity could hold; it was a rough ride. Throughout the journey, we were doing simran. After dropping Seth Hardev Singh to his hostel, I spent the night in the Patiala Bhawan.

That night I stayed up late thinking that Seth Ji was the only son of such a great Personage yet why does he not get those facilities that others would get if they were in such a position? Thinking these thoughts late into the night, I did not even remember when I fell asleep.

In the morning I woke up to meet the school's principal and their staff. Seth Ji's teachers and principal all had the same thing to say, "He is a very great and quite special child. Whatever is asked of him, he does right away, however he stays quiet most of the time. He always seems blissful, and does not speak much most of the time; however he is filled with the intention to lovingly help everyone at all times. He is very different from the other boys in school. We even have not fully understood him as of yet!"

After seeing of Seth Ji as well as the saints from Patiala, I made my way back to Delhi, but my mind was troubled. Reaching the Nirankari Coti, I had the chance to meet Baba Ji right away. After paying my respects to Him, Baba Ji noticed that I was troubled with something by looking at my face. When He asked me how my trip had been, I felt like crying and telling him what was on my mind, but I was unable to and just remained silent. He knew very well what I was feeling inside. He then asked me again "What is wrong?" Now I could not help myself and I said "Baba Ji, there is one thing that I do not understand. Seth Ji is the son of such a great personage and yet he has to take the train and bus like every other person? Even though we had a car to go to the train station, we were so tired from pushing the car that when we finally reached there we were exhausted, was it not possible for Seth Sahib to have a good car take him to the train station?" At first He was smiling when He had asked me how my trip had been, but now His face was serious after hearing me, and He said "Shastri Ji! What are you saying? Are there not other children in this world that have to face difficulties - You had to push a broken car for awhile and you became exhausted. But try to understand that there are millions of children in this world who do not even have a bicycle. And then there are those people who travel by hanging onto the sides of trains and buses, are they not human beings as well? Do they not belong to families? Shastri Ji, this is India, where thousands and thousands of children do not even get to see the doorstep of schools. Do not make the children weak. They must form the habit of adjusting to any circumstance. What I want is that they should work very hard in life and become aware of the realities that lie in this world so that they can carry on in life with determination so that they can face these realities and fulfill their responsibilities. "Let the children become aware of their country and society. Let them see the poor people, so that they can feel their pain and suffering themselves. They must realize what is the reality behind poverty and helplessness. After going through these hardships, watch how they come out and shine! The children must never feel as if they belong to a higher status family, so therefore they must not get special attention and luxuries."

After hearing Baba Ji's words of wisdom, I felt very humbled and small, understanding what the Guru expected! I realized what kind of humane valuable seeds he wanted to sow on earth. He wanted to lay a foundation of action, hard work, struggle, fearlessness and faith, whereas I was only seeing what lied on top of things. I placed my head on Baba Ji's feet and asked for forgiveness for my lack of thinking.

+ + + + + + +

Continuing on this train of thought, another story came into my mind. This story is from that time when I used to live in Kalka Ji and I used to visit the Nirankari Coti quite often. One day it was raining very hard and the streets were full of water. Visibility was very bad due to the heavy rain. Baba Ji's eldest daughter Sister Niranjan Ji, who used to study in a nearby school (which was often closed on stormy days), that day also the classes ended early and she was returning home soak and wet. I saw her from far in this condition, and my mind questioned that why should Baba Ji's daughter have to walk in this kind of weather. I could not help myself, and I went straight into Baba Ji's room. His Holiness was just about to eat lunch, when I started telling Baba Ji what was on my mind without hesitation "Baba Ji, I could not bear to see Sister Niranjan Ji in this kind of situation, today there should have been a car to pick her up."

After seeing my reaction, His Holiness Baba Ji, in the same calm manner responded "Shastri Ji! I realize that they are my children, however they are citizens of this country as well; that same country where thousands of children receive their education by sitting under trees. Which cars come to drop off and pick them up from school? They also walk many miles to get to school, disregarding the weather - whether it is raining or a hot summer day. These children also go through these hardships everyday. Don't you think that they also deserve any luxuries? Shastri Ji! I have already indicated to you that these children should learn to work hard and face difficulties in everyday life, so that they can realize how the ordinary citizen lives life."

I once again had to face embarrassment and realize that Baba Ji wanted His children to see the real picture of life, including poverty, and the meaning of helplessness so that they could always associate with those who are less fortunate in the world. He Himself knew that by going through hardships and the facts of life would bring out the shine in a person's life, just like gold must pass through fire before having a wonderful shine that lasts forever. Thus bringing out an outcome of purity, becoming a model of humanity. This was what Baba Ji wanted.

THE CORRECTING FACTOR IS LOVE

Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji saw life in a manner such that no ordinary person could be able to perceive. His Holiness' philosophy was that love and respect are the greatest weapons that can turn even a stone hearted person into a loving one. When one finds good qualities in even the worst person, and only speaks about the goodness of others, then God Himself changes that person, who in turn changes their life for the better. That was why He always inspired others to live on this principle - to find good qualities in each and everyone, and always address their finer qualities.

In reference to this context, I story comes to my mind. Once, a saint Sister Shanti Devi of Kashmiri Gate and her two young sons came to visit Baba Ji. All three seemed to be unhappy and depressed, and His Holiness Baba Ji was standing outside on the porch. A few saints who were present there, bowed to Baba Ji and then left. Sister Shanti Devi Ji also paid her respect by bowing to Baba Ji's feet and told her two sons to do the same. Obeying their mother, the two children also paid their respects to Baba Ji, however not willingly from their heart. By this time, Sister Shanti Devi had tears in her eyes and said to her sons "Now you both openly tell Baba Ji what is in your hearts." The two kept quiet, but their mother broke the silence and said "Baba Ji! You know my husband Sohan Lal quite well. He actively attends sangat and does sewa regularly, but his self esteem is so low that even though he wants to stop drinking, he is unable to. This habit has not only ruined his health, but also made the whole house in shambles and now there is no peace at home. You Yourself have witnessed how I had to force my children to do namaskar! My children want to know that how has their father benefited by doing sewa and satsang? They believe that it is all fake and meaningless, and that there has not been any benefit from doing it, how can it help us in our own lives?" She continued on in this manner. His Holiness was listening patiently to her and simultaneously observing the sad faces of her children. Baba Ji interrupted her by asking "What type of work does Sohan Lal Ji do?" Shanti Devi responded "We have a small shop. My husband is a very hard working, honest and pure hearted person, however he has a bad habit of drinking. He smokes constantly and cannot sleep without drinking first." After hearing their mother's complaints, the elder son also got the confidence to say "Baba Ji! My father does not stop drinking however when we try to smoke or drink a little, he starts to beat us! He loses his control." Baba Ji addressed the two children and said "Children! You should be thanking your father who wants you both to be successful in your lives. If he is preventing you from drinking then naturally he understands the downfall in this habit; he is aware of his own addictions and does not want his children to also suffer the same health, family and financial problems that he is facing. What is left is the problem of him not giving up his drinking habit. Perhaps, inside he wants to quit, however his body is so addicted to alcohol that he is unable to do so, and now cannot live without it. Now, he wants to protect his children on all conditions from taking up this habit. That is why, even after losing his mental stability, he still keeps on trying to stop you from this habit."

Addressing Sister Shanti Devi, Baba Ji said, "If you keep on complaining about your husband's habits to everyone and remain upset in your mind, then there will always be tension and fighting, and he will never be cured from this disease. At the present time, he needs your love, respect and support to overcome the problem. You need to develop his self esteem, so that he can rid himself of this ailment. You must convince him that the whole family is willing to support him. You must help him. Nirankar will bless him and the habits will go away."

I was thinking in my mind that Baba Ji has shown the path of love and respect to their family, but it could also be a possibility that his addiction might become more stronger. However my way of thinking was wrong. Because, a few months later, we found out that Sohan Lal Ji was completely recovered. He had quit drinking and the entire family is enjoying a life of bliss and praising Satguru. Because the life of Sohan Lal Ji was centered around devotion, that is why devotion overpowered the weakness of the mind. The one who stays attached to sewa, simran and satsang, he gets inner spiritual strength and the blessings of satsangat - which constantly brings changes in his life.

It was obvious to me that man's mind has many desires, however many times our desires struggle with our habits, that despite even our willingness to get rid of a unwanted habit we cannot. This is man's weakness. However if we get constant company of saints, we regularly serve selflessly, and keep remembering God in our minds then no habit or weakness can stand in our way. Man's strong will and devotion, along with the blessings of saints, are the ingredients that can change a person's life for the better. When there is family support on top of all this, then these changes can be easily attained. By following this path of gurmat, a family can also live a life of bliss and happiness.

GURMAT IN RELATIONSHIPS - A COMFORTING BOND

Family life plays an integral part in any human's life. The person who receives family comfort, peace and love is truly fortunate. Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji constantly preached the importance of family love and happiness. For this reason, today we see hundreds of thousands of Nirankari families who are benefiting by treading the path of Gurmat, and thus living a loving respectful life. In these relationships, devotion plays a significant role and even if worldly materialism comes in the way of life once in awhile, even then the Guru's grace and the company of saints brings them back onto the path of Truth and thus saves them from the clutches of materialism. This story depicts how the Satguru saves His disciples -

This story is related to a Nirankari family who lived in Vinay Nagar. In this family, there was the father, mother, three sons, three daughter-in-laws and two daughters (married). The entire family was completely devoted towards the Satguru. They were all very much united and there was no sense of 'mine or thine'. There were always the intention of love, respect, service and sacrifice within the home. Observing this family's love, all their relatives, neighbors and friends were sometimes happy for them, but at other times jealous of them. They often used to say that the reason for this happy family was due to their close bond to their Nirankari Satguru, holding congregations in their home, selfless service and strong faith in God. They were a great example for all the other families.

It was God's will that the head of the family passed away, however he left behind a very strong foundation of love and faith for his family. Even after his passing, there was still much unity, love and respect among them all. Due to this unity and hard work, wealth began to come in. They say that a devotee is tested in two ways: One situation is when there is an excess of material wealth, and the second is when there is a desperation for worldly wealth.

At the present time, materialism was showing its influence . Due to the abundance of wealth, the family slowly began to spend lavishly. The women in the family began to criticize each other because of their unnecessary expenses. Sometimes, even the brothers argued between themselves. It is the way of the world, that when they see a crack in the wall they don't hesitate to break down the wall. The same thing happened with this family. Some of their relatives tried to seize the opportunity to break up the family and in the end they succeeded. Slowly the arguing, fighting and tension began growing more and more. Those who believed in the power of 'Divide and conquer' were happy to see all this happen, but the saints living in the neighborhood saw all this happening and were concerned, because this family used to be the example for the rest of the families. A few well wishing saints tried to bring this family back together; but they were not very successful. The family members kept on arguing with each other. Finally, the Parmukh of the area took the entire family to Baba Ji. The Parmukh saint told the family members that you must obey whatever Baba Ji instructs you to do. Inside, they were all still devotees and took no time to agreeing.

Upon there arrival to the coti, the Parmukh saint explained the family situation to Baba Ji. He also asked for the blessing that the family can be united once again. The all-knowing Satguru already knew that materialistic influence would have to be removed first, and then they would realize their mistakes and see things the way they used to. Baba Ji very lovingly said, "Today I will not say anything different, but rather say the same thing I have been repeatedly saying for many years. That is, those who live in unity are always happy."

"Since you all are doing very well in your businesses, that shows that you are intelligent people. Compare the time when your father was alive, and your whole family was happy and respectful to each other, whereas now you have so many differences, blaming and lack of trust between yourselves; and now decide if you want to live in a heavenly environment or a bitter one. Honestly weigh between yourselves a life of living together peacefully and a life of turbulence - you will find that the weight of unity and harmony is greater. That is why the person who chooses the path of destruction can not be called wise."
